About Me

I have been a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bristol since 2009. I hold NHS appointments at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where I perform trauma surgery and run the NHS acute knee clinic. At the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital where I perform planned elective surgery and at The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

My main surgical interest is reconstructive surgery of the knee and sports injuries. I perform the full range of knee surgery with repair of damaged ligaments, cartilage and menisci. I also operate on the degenerating knee performing full joint replacements, revision surgery and unicompartmental replacements, whenever possible just replacing the effected part of the knee. I also have an interest in sports injuries of the foot and ankle and hamstring injuries.

My Approach

I place you the patient at the centre of everything I do. Following a history and examination of your presenting problem I will request appropriate imaging usually consisting of x-rays or MRI scanning to make an accurate diagnosis. As with many things in life there are often a variety of options to treat your complaint. I will use my excellent communication skills to explain in non-medical terms what is wrong with your knee or body part, work through with you your expectations, sporting or activity desires and come up with a treatment plan. For me surgery is often the last resort, and I will make sure all non-operative treatments are considered or utilised before instigating a step-wise plan for treatment. Because I focus almost exclusively on problems of the knee, I am familiar with and keep up to date on all the evolving techniques and technologies.

Teaching and Research

I Have a keen interest in teaching and research. I lecture on a number of national courses and am an honorary lecturer of the University of Bristol. I train Registrars in Orthopaedic surgery and teaches medical students and junior doctors. With the Bristol knee group I am actively involved in studies looking at the outcome of knee surgery and have published many journal articles, presenting my research nationally and internationally. I am a reviewer for the knee journal.

Training

I trained in medicine at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical school, London, graduating from Imperial College. Whilst at medical school I took a year to perform a BSc degree in Sports Physiology with a thesis performed at the Institute of Human Performance, Stanmore and the British Olympic Medical Centre. I went on to do my basic surgical training around London with a knee research fellowship for a year before undertaking 6 years of Orthopaedic Specialist training on the Bristol Rotation.

During my Orthopaedic training I undertook a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine. Spending extra time in sports medicine clinics and learning from experts in allied professions such as Physiotherapy, Physiology and Psychology. This gives me a balanced approach to my practice. I also performed a research thesis in exercise-induced pain of the lower leg.

Following my Orthopaedic training in 2008, l spent a year honing my skills in knee and sports injury surgery and assessment in 2 leading clinics abroad. I spent 6 months at Adidas Sports Injury clinic in Auckland, New Zealand. I then went to Perth Australia for 6 months. During this time I learned the latest techniques in knee ligament surgery, arthroscopy (keyhole) surgery and computer navigated joint replacement. I have also visited other leading centres across the globe to learn from their expertise.

Sporting Interests

I maintain a keen interest in sport. I compete in Triathlon and running recently performing the UK Half Ironman. When time permits I ski and mountain bike. Increasingly though I am cheering my 3 kids on from the side-lines. I have previously rowed at a high level for a number of clubs and Imperial College. I represented Wales at senior level. Subsequently I played club rugby until I became too soft! I live locally with my wife and 3 children.
